Marc Knowles (b. Ottawa, 1982) is a Montreal based visual artist. He completed a bachelor of fine arts at Concordia University in 2008 and a masters of fine arts at NSCAD University in 2016.

Knowles paints and draws worlds combining abstraction with fantastic landscapes, creating spaces that are retro-futuristic, psychedelic, and personal at the same time.

The artist‘s love for the otherworldly developed at a tender age through observing vintage science fiction paintings in books at his local library in the eighties. His present work brings this early influence together with memories of crude computer graphics and interest in geometric abstraction and abstract expressionism. In landscapes that echo with the artist’s personal and generational identity, the work explores tensions between past/future, fluid/rigid, and space/headspace in contemporary painting and drawing.

Marc Knowles, né à Ottawa en 1982, est un artiste visuel établi à Montréal. Il a complété un baccalauréat en arts visuels à l’Université Concordia en 2008, ainsi qu’une maîtrise en arts visuels à l’Université NSCAD en 2016.

Marc Knowles peint et dessine un monde combinant l’abstraction avec des paysages fantastiques, créant à la fois des espaces rétrofuturistes, psychédéliques et personnels.

La passion de l‘artiste pour les mondes imaginaires s’est développé dès sa jeunesse en observant des peintures vintages de science-fiction dans les livres de sa bibliothèque locale dans les années 80. Son travail actuel combine cette influence précoce avec des souvenirs d’infographie brute et un intérêt pour l’abstraction géométrique et l’expressionnisme abstrait. Dans des paysages qui font écho à l’identité personnelle et générationnelle de l’artiste, ce travail explore les tensions entre passé/futur, fluide/rigide et espace/espace mental dans la peinture et le dessin contemporain.
